What happened

The Landlord applied for termination of tenancy and eviction due to non-payment of rent. The Tenants contested the lawful rent amount, arguing whether the unit was exempt from rent increase limits under section 6.1 of the Act. The Board previously determined the unit was exempt. During the final hearing, the Tenants requested an adjournment because they were outside the country with unstable internet, which was denied. The ruling

The tenancy is terminated effective January 31, 2026, unless the Tenants pay $38,170.00 to void the order. If they do not void the order, they must vacate by the termination date and pay the Landlord $28,959.81, plus daily compensation of $164.38 from December 23, 2025, until they move out.
