What happened

The Tenant alleges that she was the victim of a break-in and theft in her rental unit due to the negligent actions of the Landlord and the Landlord's agent, M. Khurram (MK). She alleges that MK lost the key to her unit, and he failed to inform the Tenant. As a result of the break-in that took place in May 2021, the Tenant alleges she lost a number of important documents, as well as valuable personal belongings.

The ruling

The Landlord and Landlord's agent, MK, substantially interfered with the Tenant's reasonable enjoyment of the rental unit by failing to inform the Tenant about the missing lockboxes and keys, which led to a break-in and theft of the Tenant's belongings. The Tenant is awarded $5,950.52, including rent abatement, replacement of lost items, storage expenses, and general damages.
