What happened
The Tenant applied for an order determining that the Landlord entered the rental unit illegally, altered the locking system on a door giving entry to the rental unit or residential complex without giving the Tenant replacement keys, and substantially interfered with the Tenant's reasonable enjoyment of the rental unit.
The ruling
The Landlord substantially interfered with the Tenant's reasonable enjoyment of the rental unit by refusing to allow the Tenant access to the unit after the Tenant was released from jail. The Landlord's actions amounted to an illegal eviction. The Tenant is awarded $1,900 for the value of his lost property and $5,000 in general damages. The Landlord is ordered to store the Tenant's remaining property until October 31, 2023.
