What happened

The Tenant applied for a reduction in rent because the Landlord discontinued internet services that were previously provided as part of the tenancy. The Landlord admitted to stopping the service in June 2024 due to a significant increase in the monthly cost from her provider. The Tenant subsequently paid for his own internet, sometimes sharing costs with other residents.

The ruling

The LTB ordered a permanent monthly rent reduction of $50.79 effective August 1, 2025, due to the discontinuance of internet service. The Landlord is ordered to pay the Tenant $412.38 by August 8, 2025, covering retroactive rent reductions and the LTB filing fee.
