What happened

Tenant applied for an order determining that the Landlord has collected or retained money illegally. The Tenant's cottage is located on property in Nebonaionquet Twp. on Anjigami Lake, and the Tenant entered into a lease with a previous owner in 1978. The Landlord increased the rent substantially in 2008 without proper notice, which the Tenant believed he had no choice but to pay.

The ruling

The Board ordered the Landlord to pay the Tenant $1,142.39 representing the excess rent collected, as well as $45 for the cost of filing the application. The lawful rent for the rental unit is $691.52 per year.
